FAQ

How does the weakness system work?
Each enemy has an element and a weakness element. Matching your attack element to the weakness deals bonus damage — for example Shoppers are Insanity-element and weak to Curse, while Drippers are Darkness and weak to Light.
Is physical or magic damage better?
Both, situationally. Enemies have separate physical and magic defense stats — some, like the Gravewarden, stack overwhelming physical defense but nearly no magic defense. Carry one option of each.
What do blessings and curses do in combat?
They come from mysteries and events and modify fights directly — Greed raises Luck, Fear and Doom afflict you in battle, and rituals like Ghost Blast and Dark Blast are combat skills unlocked through task chains.

Combat in Elderfield is a deliberate, turn-based system layered under the farming life — Lovecraftian encounters you prepare for, not dodge. The preparation is the skill: elements, weaknesses, defense splits, and the blessing economy from mysteries. This guide covers the rules with demo-verified numbers.

The Element Wheel

Every enemy has an element and a weakness. Six elements appear in the demo data: Normal, Light, Darkness, Curse, Insanity, and Insight. The weakness pairings that recur:

Enemy Element Weakness
Shopper Insanity Curse
Mutant Shopper V1 Light Darkness
Mutant Shopper V2 Darkness Light
Mutant Shopper V3 Insight Insanity
Rat Curse Light
Dripper (Sewers) Darkness Light
Pipe Cleaner (Sewers) Insanity Insight
Office Slime (Mall) Insanity Insight
Cornstalker (Farm) Light Darkness
Pumpkin (Farm) Curse Light
Caveman (Mines) Darkness Light
Fingermen (Mines) Insight Insanity
Globule Normal Light
Living Stump (Old Woods) Curse Light
Wild Deer Darkness Light

Light answers Darkness and Curse; Insanity-weak enemies split between Insight and Curse depending on the enemy. Mutant variants flip the expected pairing — check before you commit.

Physical vs Magic Defense

Every enemy carries separate physical and magic defense, and the spread is where fights are won:

  • Gravewarden (Greystone Estates): 100 physical defense vs 10 magic defense — the demo’s loudest argument for a magic option
  • Mr. Wiggles (Greystone Estates): balanced 36/33, but 350 HP and no elemental weakness — a raw stats check
  • Living Rock trades physical toughness for a modest magic attack of its own

The practical loadout: one physical attacker, one Insight or Light option, one Curse or Darkness option, and a heal. Retreating from a losing fight is always available — leave, return with the right element, a rule worth living by in the Mines.

Early Enemies by the Numbers

Enemy Location HP Atk Def
Rat Mall F1 22 7 9
Caveman Beginner / Mall Mines 17 6 6
Pumpkin Farm 10 10 9
Dripper Sewers F1 30 7 9
Shopper Mall F1 28 8 9
Headbush Farm 34 8 8
Office Slime Mall F1 50 10 13
Special Cat Town 60 12 10
Mimic Mall / Mines 60→150→250 7→14→24 9→10→28

Many enemies return later at LV2 / LV3 with sharply higher stats (Cornstalker goes 24 HP to 200) — an area feeling “cleared” never stays cleared.

Bosses You Will Meet Early

  • Denizen of the Deep Fryer (Mall F1): 200 HP, Light element, weak to Darkness — drops Mystery Meat; Hans’s A Fast Food Fiend sends you here
  • Mall Administrator (Mall F1 Hallways): 250 HP, Insanity element, weak to Insight — full guide at Mall Administrator boss strategy
  • Weird Fish (Lakefront): 400 HP, appears randomly while fishing — drops Godscale and Godflesh, the gift goldmine
  • Soul Swarm (Farm): LV1 is unkillable (zero stats — the story encounter); LV2 is the real fight at 200 HP

Blessings, Curses and Rituals

Mysteries and events modify combat before a turn is taken: Greed (+Luck), Skepticism, Fear / Doom afflictions, and permanent stat changes from bad rolls. Rituals are combat skills earned through tasks:

  • Ghost Blast — Pete’s By the Gods (investigate 2 God Shrines)
  • Dark Blast — Old Man Jackson’s Build-A-Wife chain
  • Stone Shield / Staff of Insight — Akira’s Time to Investigate milestones

Treasuring your rolls in the mysteries guide is, bluntly, combat prep.

Survival Habits That Hold Up

  1. Retreat is free. Leave, fish, cook, upgrade — come back with the counter-element.
  2. Heal before the next room. The Steam community’s most-repeated demo advice, and it survives the full game.
  3. Respect LV2 zones. Re-entered areas spawn upgraded versions; your old route is not your old difficulty.
  4. Feed your fighters. Cooking output (see the farming guide for ingredients) is the cheapest stat stick in the game.

For the first boss most players hit, read the Mall Administrator guide — it is also the Tentacle Cleanup milestone that rewards the Basic Axe.
