FAQ

How do I unlock cooking in Elderfield?
Complete Farmer Hans's The Farmer's Path — the Wheat deliverable from your first planting. It unlocks the Grinder and Chef Elroy's recipe shop, the backbone of every later recipe.
Which recipes come from tasks rather than the shop?
Herb's Casting your Line pays fish recipes across its stages — Fog Broth (Fog Eel plus Celery) comes from stage 2 — Dave's A Snack for a Cat rewards the Preserving Barrel, Gretta's Cursed Cuisine pays the Stew of Six Curses recipe, and the Void Dinner recipe can roll from fishing treasure catches.
What cooked dish works as a gift for the most villagers?
Harvest Stew — loved by Tanner and Josh — and Aged Cheese, which Josh loves. Always cross-check the hated lists first: Sam hates Harvest Stew and pumpkin dishes.

Every cozy horror town runs on its kitchen, and Elderfield is no exception: cooking turns fishing hauls and farm surplus into the town’s real currency — gifts. This guide tracks what unlocks cooking, where every known recipe comes from, and which dishes win which villagers.

How does cooking unlock?

The gate is Farmer Hans’s The Farmer’s Path — his first task, and your day-one planting. Its Wheat deliverable (see the beginner guide route) unlocks two things at once:

  1. The Grinder — processing for your harvest
  2. Chef Elroy’s recipe shop — the recipe vendor everything else builds on

From there, recipes arrive from three directions: the shop itself, task rewards, and loot rolls. The farming guide covers which crops to run for ingredients — Eyeleaf for Eyeballs, Celery for Fog Broth, Corn and Pumpkin for the baking chain.

Every known recipe source

Recipe or dish Source Effect

Fog Broth (Fog Eel + Celery) Herb’s Casting your Line, stage 2 65 HP
Void Dinner Fishing treasure lucky roll (recipe) 120 HP + Zealotry blessing
Pumpkin Pie / Pumpkin Muffin Purchased from Chef Elroy after The Skull Chalice 75 HP / 50 HP + 15 MP
Harvest Stew See the gift economy below 100 HP + 10 MP
Hotdog, Bread, Vegetable Soup, Bitter Gel Beginner recipes (Saloon stocks some) 30 / 10 / 20 HP / 10 MP
Stew of Six Curses Gretta’s Cursed Cuisine task “Completely inedible to humans” — mystery use
Cup of Coffee Coffee Maker station (Coffee Bean ×3) +1 Movement Speed, 4 hours
Aged wines and cheese The Keg and artisan processing —
Pickled Eyeballs Your Eyeleaf crop (Eyeballs), preserved —

The Preserving Barrel from Dave’s errand deserves the detour — it is also obtainable through Art’s Secrets of the Deep, and it is a core farm-processing building. The Fog Eel half of Fog Broth is the leech-bait trick catch covered on the Fog Eel page.

Which dishes do villagers want?

Cooked food saturates the gift tables. The verified pairs, loved and hated:

Dish Loved by Hated by
Harvest Stew Tanner, Josh Sam
Aged Cheese Josh —
Pickled Eyeballs Ellie —
Void Dinner Sam —
Expert BBQ Platter Josh —
Expert Garden Salad Sam —
Pumpkin Pie / Pumpkin Muffin — (Tanner likes) Sam
Vegetable Cocktail — (Edwin likes) —
Fruit Salad / Lemonade / Light Salad — Josh

The trap rows matter as much as the wins: the “healthy basket” Josh hates, the pumpkin chain Sam hates, the Harvest Stew split between Tanner’s loves and Sam’s hates. Full per-villager tables live in the gift guide.

Why fighters eat too

The combat guide ranks cooking output as the cheapest stat stick in the game, and its survival rules assume it: heal before the next room, and retreat to fish-and-cook when a fight goes sideways. A stocked kitchen is combat prep — the same haul that fills gift slots keeps the Mines runs alive.

Dish effects are now itemized in the wiki’s post-release record — the biggest heal on the early lists is Void Dinner at 120 HP plus its Zealotry blessing, with Harvest Stew close behind at 100. A few recipe sources on that page are still placeholders (Vegetable Cocktail among them); where the wiki is blank, this page stays blank too.
