Welcome to Elderfield Beginner Guide - First Days in Town
How to start Welcome to Elderfield: clear Ghost Tentacles, get your first tools and fishing rod, pick your difficulty, and set up a profitable first farm.
FAQ
Should I play cozy mode or Old Gods mode first?
Where do I get Cleansing Balm at the start?
How do I save the game?
Welcome to Elderfield drops you into a town where the abnormal is normal: crops grow teeth, the neighbors are odd, and eldritch beings watch from the treeline. Under the cozy horror surface it plays like a structured farming RPG — tools, tasks, seasons, and turn-based combat. This beginner guide walks the first days in order: difficulty, farm cleanup, first tools, first income, and the task chains that unlock everything else.
Which Difficulty Should You Pick?
At the start you choose between cozy mode and Old Gods mode. Cozy is the intended first experience — the full farming, friendship, and mystery loop without punishing combat. Old Gods is the challenging mode aimed at returning players. Nothing in this guide assumes either mode, but if you want to learn fishing and farming before fighting for your life, start cozy.
Day One: Clear the Farm and Get Your Tools
Your farm plot starts buried under Ghost Tentacles. You cannot till, plant, or water a tile until it is cleared, and clearing takes one Cleansing Balm per cluster. Your early supplies:
- Farmer Hans (Farmhouse) gifts 8 Cleansing Balms — enough for the first tiles
- Old Man Crawford stocks 8 more at his shop
- Extra balms drop from monsters and can be foraged in the Mall Mine

See Cleansing Balm: how to get it for every source and how to never run dry.
Once a tile is clear, collect your starter kit from Old Man Crawford: the Watering Can (1 tile, 16 capacity) and the Basic Gardening Hoe (1 tile). Both have Sturdy, Quality, and Superior tiers forged later in the Workshop — see the farming guide for the full tool ladder.
Plant Wheat right away (5g seeds from Crawford and the Farmhouse). Wheat matures in 4 nights and is the deliverable for Hans’s first task, The Farmer’s Path, which unlocks the Grinder and Chef Elroy’s recipe shop.
How the Clock and Seasons Work
The day changes at midnight even if you never sleep — there is no freeze-the-clock trick. Crops count growth in nights, not days: a 4-night crop planted today is ready on the fifth morning. Unwatered crops simply pause for that night; nothing withers.

The year runs four seasons: Rebirth, Harvest, Witch, and Death. Crops, fish, and forage all rotate with them — the fishing guide lists which fish only appear in which season and time window.
First Income: The Task Board and Fishing Rod
Money in the first week comes from three places:
- The task board in Town. Tier 1 tasks center on the Town, Farm, and Mall. Most are simple fetch-and-fight errands with tool or seed rewards.
- Herb’s fishing quest. Talk to Herb at the Lakefront — Casting your Line hands you the Old Fishing Rod and 3 worms for free. Showing him a Ghost Flounder and a Fog Eel pays out 5 fish recipes.
- Forage and monsters. Everything drops sellable gunk. Mystery Meat funds early seed purchases.
The single most important early task is Molly’s Helping Molly (Town Outskirts): bring her Copper Ore and she grants the Rusty Pickaxe plus Workshop access. The Workshop forges every tool upgrade in the game — fishing rods, hoes, watering cans — so do this before anything else on the board.
Combat in Five Lines
Combat is turn-based, and every enemy carries an element with a weakness — a Darkness-weak enemy takes bonus damage from Light attacks, an Insanity-weak one from Insight. Check the weakness before a hard fight in the combat guide. One demo-tested habit worth keeping: walk away when a fight is going badly. You can always leave, farm, fish, or cook, and come back stronger.
Who to Befriend First
Gifting runs on a loved / liked / hated / neutral reaction table per villager, and one item — the Beating Heart — is loved by nearly every main character. The gift guide has full tables; start with Tanner near the Old Woods and Molly by the Workshop, since their quests gate progression.
