Elderfield Gift Guide - What to Give Every Character

FAQ

Is there a gift every character loves?
The Beating Heart is loved by Tanner, Sam, Ellie, Edwin, Josh, Molly and Alice — the closest thing to a universal loved gift in the demo data.
How often can I give gifts?
Gift reactions are per-item on each character's loved / liked / hated / neutral table. Fish and farm what that villager loves, then gift on a steady rhythm rather than spamming hated items.
What should I never give?
Check each character's hated list before gifting. Ellie and Edwin hate Holy Water, Sam hates Ghost Flounder, and Josh hates Fruit Salad and Lemonade — hated gifts waste both the item and the reaction.

Friendship in Elderfield is a gifting game: every villager keeps a reaction table with four tiers — loved, liked, hated, neutral — covering fish, crops, cooked food, forage, and oddities. This guide explains the tiers, then gives each main character’s best picks with links to their full schedule pages.

How Gift Tiers Work

Each character’s table lists exact items per tier. Loved gifts build friendship fastest; hated gifts do the opposite; neutral items (most raw materials like ores and bones) do nothing. Two practical rules:

  1. Fish are the cheapest loved gifts. A single lake session stocks reactions for half the town — see the fishing guide for what each water gives.
  2. Farm byproducts cover the liked tier for free. Corn, Pumpkin Pie, Pumpkin Muffin and Vegetable Cocktail appear on many liked lists, and all of them come from your own fields (see the farming guide).

The Universal Play: Beating Heart

The Beating Heart is loved by Tanner, Sam, Ellie, Edwin, Josh, Molly, and Alice — seven of the eight main characters with full demo gift tables (Blorph, the sewer resident, is the exception). Whatever your friendship goal, a supply of Beating Hearts outperforms every curated alternative. After that, each villager has a personal loved list worth farming:

Character Loved gifts (beyond Beating Heart) Easy source
Tanner Aged Rum, Harvest Stew, Shadewing Moth Fishing + cooking
Sam Pale Empress Moth, Soul Fruit, Voidbloom, Void Crystal Bar, Expert Garden Salad Bug catching + progression
Ellie Bloodwing Moth, Gorgon’s Eye, Pickled Eyeballs, Spectral Rain, Soul Fruit Bug catching + farm (Eyeballs)
Edwin Blood of the Gods, Godflesh, Gorgon’s Eye, Pale Empress Moth, Void Crystal Bar Fishing rain loot + progression
Molly Godscale, Platinum Ore / Bar, Pale Empress Moth, Funneltop Rain-day fishing
Josh Bloodwing Moth, Expert BBQ Platter, Harvest Stew Bug catching + cooking
Alice Holy Water (L/G), Shadewing Moth, aged wines, Spectral Rain, Gorgon’s Eye Aged wines via the Keg

Moths: Two Nets That Cover the Town

Almost every main character loves or likes a moth — with one swap to remember:

  • Pale Empress Moth — loved by Sam, Edwin, and Molly; caught via Hans’s Tier 2 bug-catching task
  • Shadewing Moth — loved by Tanner and Alice, liked by Sam, Ellie, and Edwin
  • Bloodwing Moth — loved by Josh and Ellie, hated by Tanner — the one villager the moth basket backfires on

Bug catching quietly becomes the highest-ROI friendship skill in the game.

Gifts to Double-Check Before Giving

Hated lists bite hardest when items look thoughtful:

  • Ellie hates Holy Water and Cleansing Balm — the church’s gifts backfire
  • Edwin hates Holy Water and Gravemoss
  • Sam hates Ghost Flounder, Pumpkin, and Harvest Stew — the flounder Tanner is neutral on
  • Josh hates Fruit Salad, Lemonade, and Light Salad — the “healthy” basket fails
  • Molly hates Blackiron Ore and Rawhide

Fish are neutral for Tanner across the board, so cheap lake fish never offend him while you stock real gifts.

Friendship Beyond Gifts

Gifts are the fast lane, but schedules matter for delivery: villagers move by time slot and weather (home in rain and snow), so catching someone means knowing their day. Each character page carries their full schedule — start with Tanner, Sam, Ellie, Edwin, and Molly. For the systems that stock your gift inventory, see the beginner guide.
