FAQ
Who can you marry in Welcome to Elderfield?
How many hearts do you need to marry?
Can you get divorced in Elderfield?
Romance in Elderfield is a one-shot decision dressed up as a friendship sim: the courtship cast can be raised to ten hearts, but the marriage that caps the system happens once, keeps the spouse, and offers no way back. The courtship is the game — the wedding is a commitment device.
Can you date and marry villagers in Welcome to Elderfield?
Yes — romance and marriage are official systems. The documented courtship cast is the eight main villagers; friendship climbs a ten-heart ladder with story events on the way, and a proposal at ten hearts triggers the wedding and moves your spouse into your home. The achievements confirm the shape of it: Friendly wants ten hearts with one character, Socialite wants ten hearts with all characters, and In This Together wants the marriage itself (see the achievements guide).
The Heart Ladder: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10
Friendship events unlock at two, four, six, eight and ten hearts, and the community documentation puts a pace limit on them: one heart event per in-game day, each tied to a specific time and place. The confirmed settings so far:
| Candidate | Hearts | Where the event fires |
|---|---|---|
| Tanner | 2 | The Saloon, after 7pm |
| Sam | 4 | The Lakefront |
| Alice | 4 | The Library |
The pattern to plan around: these are appointments, not cutscenes. A candidate sitting at four hearts will not fire their event while you are fishing at dawn — check where they are, be there at the hour, and the scene plays. More event locations are being logged as the community plays; the eight full character pages collect each villager’s documented days so you can stage the meeting (Tanner, Sam, Ellie, Edwin, Molly, Josh, Alice, Blorph).
Group Invitations at Four Hearts
Friendship also routes through small groups: reaching four hearts with any one member of a villager group qualifies you for that group’s invitation event — you do not need four hearts with all of them. One close friendship inside a circle opens the circle’s door, which keeps the social ladder climbable while you focus gifts on one or two favorites.
Who Is Courtship Material
| Candidate | Angle |
|---|---|
| Tanner | Fish-neutral and easy to find — the low-stress start |
| Sam | Bug-catching and progression gifts |
| Ellie | The Eyeball farm route (Pickled Eyeballs) |
| Edwin | Holy Water is wasted on him — bring the void instead |
| Molly | Beeline her errand anyway: she unlocks the Workshop |
| Josh | Cheap liked tier; the kitchen carries his loves |
| Alice | The Holy Water mirror of Edwin |
| Blorph | The Beating Heart exception — fish and salvage |
| Celeste | Sometimes floated as a candidate; nothing documented — treat as unconfirmed |
Celeste is the rumor zone: her name comes up alongside the eight, but the wiki has no gift table, home or schedule for her, and no official candidate list exists. Until that changes she is a name to watch, not a wedding plan.
The Proposal and the One-Marriage Rule
At ten hearts the proposal opens, the wedding follows, and your spouse moves in. The rule that shapes everything before it: one marriage, permanently. Community guides for the launch build report no divorce and no second wedding — so the ten-heart ladder with everyone (the Socialite achievement) and the single proposal are separate projects. Finish your touring before you commit; the heart-event table above is the tasting menu.
Gifts are the engine that gets you there, and the gift guide’s tier tables are the shopping list — the Beating Heart covers seven candidates, and each page’s loved list shortens the remaining climb.
