Elderfield Farming Guide - Crops, Tools and Season Calendar
Complete Elderfield farming guide: growth mechanics, every crop with seed cost and profit, the watering can and hoe ladder, scarecrows, fertilizer and effigies.
FAQ
Do crops die if I forget to water them?
How do I stop crows from eating my crops?
What clears the Ghost Tentacles on my farm?
Farming is the spine of Elderfield: it funds tools, tasks, and gifts. The systems are friendlier than they look — nothing withers, growth pauses instead of resetting — but the money is in crop selection, tool upgrades, and the effigy and fertilizer layers. Everything below is verified against the final demo and the official wiki.
Growth Mechanics in Four Rules
- Growth counts nights, excluding planting day. A 4-night crop planted today is ready on the fifth morning.
- The day flips at midnight — even if you never sleep.
- Unwatered crops pause, not die. They skip that night’s growth and resume when watered.
- Every farming level grants +1% crop growth — levels compound into faster harvests.
Your starting tiles are buried under Ghost Tentacles: clear each cluster with one Cleansing Balm, till with the hoe, then fertilize and plant. Watering only works after planting. If you are brand new, the beginner guide sequences the first-week unlocks.
The Tool Ladder
All upgrades are forged in the Workshop — unlocked by Molly’s Helping Molly task, another reason to bring her Copper Ore early.
| Tool | Tiles | Capacity | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Watering Can | 1 | 16 | Old Man Crawford |
| Sturdy Watering Can | 3 | 32 | Workshop |
| Quality Watering Can | 5 | 48 | Workshop |
| Superior Watering Can | 8 | 64 | Workshop |
| Basic Gardening Hoe | 1 | — | Crawford |
| Sturdy / Quality / Superior Hoe | 3 / 5 / 8 | — | Workshop |
Two automation pieces close the loop: Offerings of Rain (Lesser / Medium / Greater) auto-water 4 / 8 / 16 days when placed in a Ritual Brazier, and the Enchanted Pitchfork (God Altar, Hagroth affinity) auto-harvests wandering crops on contact.
Common Crops
Seeds from Crawford and the Farmhouse; several unlock through tasks (Hans’s chains grant Pumpkin and Corn). Sell prices are base tier — quality multiplies roughly ×1.33 / ×1.67 / ×2. The season columns use the official wiki’s Sp / Su / Au / Wi shorthand; the game’s four seasons are Rebirth, Harvest, Witch, and Death, and the exact season-to-column pairing is part of the launch re-verification.
| Crop | Seed | Nights | Regrows | Yield | Sell | Seasons |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wheat | 5g | 4 | — | 1–3 | 12g | Sp/Su/Au |
| Eyeleaf (→ Eyeball) | 5g | 4 | — | 1 | 26g | all |

Best early rotations: Radish (4 nights, 40g on a 10g seed) for fast cash, Eyeleaf in every season for cooking eyeballs, and Cauliflower as the slow-season jackpot.

The seasonal Seed Vendor appears Mondays and Fridays (absent during Rebirth) with Tomato, Watermelon, Dread Pepper, Squash and more — several of those seeds only reach the shop through task rewards.
Scarecrows and Crows
Crows eat growing crops on plots without a scarecrow in range (fully grown crops are safe). One scarecrow per field, five tiers:
| Scarecrow | Blocks | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Ragged | 20% | Crawford |
| Basic | 40% | — |
| Jack o’ | 60% | — |
| Tortured | 80% | — |
| Dripping | 100% | Workbench |
Fertilizer and Effigies
Fertilizer (Compost Bin; highest level in your bag applies first):
- Dense Lv1 / Lv2 — +5% / +10% chance of double harvest
- Fancy Lv1 / Lv2 — +10% / +20% chance of higher quality
Effigies (Workbench, max 2 per field):
- Harvest Effigies (L/M/G) — +4% / +8% / +12% chance of 2× crops
- Fertility Effigies (L/M/G) — +8% / +16% / +24% chance unwatered crops still grow
Moon Events and the Tax Man
Sleep events and the moon calendar touch your fields directly: a forest-spirits sleep event grants an extra growth tick at the next moon event, and the Strange Moon adds one extra growth that night. The Tax Man event, when paid, blesses you with Growth Blessing (+5% quantity) or Burgeoning (+5% quality); unpaid, he curses the farm with Carrion Crows or Blight (−10%). The mysteries guide covers the luck system that drives these rolls, and crop byproducts like Eyeballs are steady gift fodder for villagers such as Edwin.
